What kind of audience would a vintage-styled scientist pin-up girl (retro clothes and hair, red lips, a curvacious figure and tailored white lab coat) attract? Vintage and retro fans, rockabilly girls and guys, burlesque performers and fans, feminists, lesbian women? All of these I think. Modern, confident, feminist women have chosen to dress and be glamorous like women of the 1940s and 1950s, but they live in a modern world and have made their own subversive choice. I think there is a certain sex positive feminist statement in this. I myself would dress up like this and be very inspired if another woman had done this. And I would not be doing this for a male gaze or conforming to societal norms. Members of the sub-cultures and groups that would be interested in this representation would understand the motivations of people who dress like this. Of coarse there would be some retro pin-up girls and burlesque performers who dress and perform for a male gaze, but there would others doing it for themselves or other women. It is to this that lesbian women may respond and maybe develop an interest in science.
