On saturday while driving out to the shops in the rain, I observed a small number of orange-yellow phallic shaped stinkhorn fungi on a grassy median strip between the left and right lanes of a local road. I thought this was pretty fantastic as I had never seen these fungi before (accept in books and on the web). I was so impressed that I went back on Sunday to photograph the fascinating fungi. And when photographing the specimens, I was surprised to also observe bright red phallic shaped Stinkhorn fungi. I did some research on fungi blogs and the web, and I determined that I had observed two species of phallic shaped Stinkhorn fungi in close proximity to each other. The species observed were likely to be Phallus multicolor (the orange-yellow specimens) and Phallus rubicundus (the red specimens).
