I am fascinated by reptiles. I was lucky to observe and photograph some Australian Water Dragons up close and a Brisbane River Turtle basking in the lunchtime sun.

Spotting on my morning walk to work –

  • A family of Swamp Hens making a nest on a lake bank, foraging for food and feeding a young chick whose wings were still very small
  • An Australian Water Dragon basking in a flower bed near a lake bank

After eating my lunch by the lake today, I decided to take a walk around the largest lake. As I walked and photographed the vibrant purple jacarandas lining the path, I observed a large water dragon and two turtles (Brisbane River Turtles). Both turtles were perched on rocks sticking out from the water. Perhaps sunning themselves in the mid afternoon sun? As I photographed one turtle I observed its head moving to get a better view of me and I could clearly see its small eyes. Such fascinating creatures. 20131010-173402.jpg20131010-173440.jpg

Below are photos of water dragons observed in or near the lakes in late September. Twice, while photographing a dragon perched on a bank near the waters edge, the dragon jumped into the water and swam away. As the dragon swam I observed that the motion looked very similar to that of crocodiles, with legs tucked close into the body and propulsion provided by a long strong tail. Fascinating!

During my lunch break I decided to again sit by the lake and eat my lunch and then head off for a walk around the lake. Today I also spotted a variety of wildlife, including four water dragons (two large dragons and two small, including one lying on a branch near the water’s edge), swamp hens, moorhens, pelicans and a Little Pied Cormorant

Yesterday during my lunch break I decided to sit near the complex of lakes in the grounds of the university I work at. I spotted an Australian Water Dragon sunning itself on my walk to the lakes. I eat my lunch, observing a flock of Corellas perched in a tree and a Noisy Minor and moorhen scavenging for scraps near my feet. Then I took a walk around the bigger lake and spotted two Little Pied Cormorants, three Little Black Cormorants, pelicans, moorhens, Swamphens, ducks and two turtles perched on rocks poking out of the lake waters.

I’ve previously blogged about observing, over a number of days, a water dragon perched on an inlet pipe – Water Dragons Observed – May 2013 – continued, and a water dragon lying on a branch of shrub overhanging the lake – Water Dragons Observed – May 2013. I was intrigued to once again observed these ‘phenomena’ this week. A dragon was present on the inlet pipe on at least two days, and a dragon was located in the same shrub overhanging the water (third photo below – in the middle of the frame). In the fourth photo below you can see the silhouetted shape of the dragon lying length ways on a branch. In my last post I speculated that the dragon may have been in the tree as moorhens may have been nesting below. But in this instance there didn’t appear to be a nest or nesting material beneath where the dragon was perched.

This morning I again observed a water dragon on the inlet pipe in one of the lake at the university I work. See photo below – dragon is on the edge of left point of the diamond shopped mesh. Only this morning I posted – Water Dragons Observed – May 2013 about observing this phenomena two days in a row. With today’s observation I have observed a water dragon on the inlet pipe on three consecutive days.

Over the month of May I have observed water dragons around the lake at the university I work at, and this is no different to observing these reptiles in other months throughout the year. But in the last week or so I have observed water dragons in interesting locations.

One day I observed a dragon lying on the length of a branch of a native shrub overhanging the lake edge. I thought this was rather unusual, to be perched in a shrub weaker branches to that of a tree. On the water below the shrub there were a couple of ducks and moorhens. Maybe the dragon was looking for bird eggs?

In my post An Oriental Darter and a Water Dragon from earlier this week I described observing a water dragon co-located with an Oriental Darter on an inlet pipe. Interestingly on two other consecutive days (in the morning) this week I also observed a water dragon on the inlet pipe.

I also have observed dragons lying on logs in the lake waters, which I observe on a regular basis.
