After eating my lunch by the lake today, I decided to take a walk around the largest lake. As I walked and photographed the vibrant purple jacarandas lining the path, I observed a large water dragon and two turtles (Brisbane River Turtles). Both turtles were perched on rocks sticking out from the water. Perhaps sunning themselves in the mid afternoon sun? As I photographed one turtle I observed its head moving to get a better view of me and I could clearly see its small eyes. Such fascinating creatures.

Below are photos of water dragons observed in or near the lakes in late September. Twice, while photographing a dragon perched on a bank near the waters edge, the dragon jumped into the water and swam away. As the dragon swam I observed that the motion looked very similar to that of crocodiles, with legs tucked close into the body and propulsion provided by a long strong tail. Fascinating!
